Plain-English guide to units, Kelly sizing, and why stakes vary
A unit is a fixed fraction of your betting bank — specifically 1% of your bank. If your bank is £500, one unit = £5. This keeps your exposure proportional to your bankroll no matter its size.
The Kelly Criterion is a mathematical formula that calculates the optimal bet size based on your edge over the market. In simple terms: the bigger the gap between the model's estimated win probability and the bookmaker's implied probability, the larger the recommended stake.
We use fractional Kelly (a fraction of the full Kelly size) to reduce variance — full Kelly can produce large swings even when the edge is real. Fractional Kelly keeps growth steady and drawdowns manageable.
Not all edges are equal. A 3% overlay at 2/1 is a different proposition than a 15% overlay at 10/1. The model calculates each selection's unique edge and maps it to a stake size accordingly.
